Early Life
Gystere grew up in Issy-les-Moulineaux, a suburb of Paris, in a family steeped in artistic and academic traditions. His mother, Anna Amazonas, is an Afro-Brazilian artist, while his father, Alain Peskine, is a Russian-born architecture professor. Adrien was the middle child among his brothers Alexis and Anthony, both of whom are also artists, and he has a half-brother named Vania. His grandfather, Boris Peskine, was a notable filmmaker and member of the French Resistance.
From a young age, Gystere showed an inclination towards the arts. By 1990, he was creating animated films, and two years later, he began exploring music, inspired by artists like Gilberto Gil, Ice Cube, and Arrested Development. His artistic endeavors were further influenced by the musical talents in his maternal family, many of whom were guitarists.
Career
Gystere's official foray into the music scene began in 1995 as a member of the rap group FRER 200™ alongside Harold Gaillard (FiBo) and Eric Nicolle (Kombo). He expanded his musical repertoire in 2003 by joining the funk band Disto TV, where he played keyboards, drums, and percussion.
In 2010, Gystere teamed up with producer Drixxxé to form McLuvin, a duo that melded alternative hip-hop, electro, rock, and pop. Their first EP, released in July 2010, was followed by 'Animal' in June 2011 and a full album in March 2012.
In 2013, Gystere embarked on a new solo project, producing an album featuring the diptych 'WOMXN / Time Machine.' This project evolved over the years, culminating in the 2020 album 'A Little Story,' which includes tracks like 'Strange breathin',' addressing global police violence. His musical style, a unique fusion of funk, progressive rock, R&B, rap, and jazz, is primarily performed in English.
Gystere continues to engage in various musical pursuits, including DJing in Paris, playing piano for Marc Cerrone, and composing for the TV show 'Le Grand Journal' on Canal+. In 2022, he collaborated with Esperanza Spalding, producing her NPR Tiny Desk performance and featuring her on his album 'Another Story,' an enriched reissue of 'A Little Story.'
Other Creative Pursuits
Gystere's talents are not confined to music. He has directed several music videos, such as 'WOMXN The Nightmare Of You Know Who' (co-directed with Eden Tinto Collins) and 'Strange breathin'' (co-directed with his brother Anthony Peskine). His visual style is as eclectic and vibrant as his musical compositions.
In radio, Gystere joined Radio Nova in 2020 as a commentator on the show 'Super Nova,' where he adapted his Gystere Show into a weekly segment.
