Career
In 2016, Immy traveled to Ghana to study under his grandfather, delving into the rich musical traditions of the region. In 2022, he recorded his debut album, released in 2023, featuring his father Kojo Noah Owusu and Ghanaian drummer Julius Sackey. The recording session included members of cinematic soul bands Karate Boogaloo and Surprise Chef.
Immy is not only a musician but also a drum teacher, serving as the touring and studio drummer for artists like Yirrimal and One Spirit Africa. He is multi-instrumental, playing drums, guitar, balafon, seprewaa, and djembe in the Ashanti tradition.
His music, often described as 'Afrodelik,' is a unique blend of Psychedelia, Zamrock, and West African Highlife. Immy's upbringing in Torquay, surrounded by the coastal rock scene and Ghanaian cultural influences, reflects in his diverse musical style.
In 2019, his self-produced single 'Danger' premiered on triple j's Roots 'n All. Following that, his singles 'Mantra' and 'Brown Supremacy,' produced by Liam McGorry, were released on Hopestreet Recordings in early 2022, receiving acclaim and international airplay.
Immy's debut album, titled 'LO-LIFE!', involves collaboration with members of Surprise Chef, Cactus Channel, and Senegambian Jazz Band, set to be released in mid-2023 via Hopestreet Recordings. Immy Owusu's music, a rich tapestry of cultural influences, continues to captivate audiences globally.
