Michael Pisaro Liu

Pisaro-Liu has expanded his compositional reach with recent works for orchestras, including commissions for the BBC Scottish Symphony, INSUB MetaOrchestra, and the Grand Orchestre de Muzzix. His current focus often revolves around mixed-media assemblages, a collaborative effort with filmmaker/artist/writer Cherlyn Hsing-Hsin Pisaro-Liu.

Recordings of Pisaro-Liu's compositions can be found on Edition Wandelweiser Records, erstwhile records, New World Records, elsewhere music, Hubro, Potlatch, another timbre, meena/ftarri, Senufo Editions, Intonema, winds measure, HEM Berlin, and his own imprint, Gravity Wave. His work is celebrated and regularly performed across the United States, Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia.

Beyond his creative pursuits, Pisaro-Liu serves as the Director of Composition and Experimental Music at the California Institute of the Arts, influencing the next generation of avant-garde musicians.

Pisaro-Liu's evolution into integrating field recordings into his work is evident in albums like "Transparent City," "Continuum Unbound," and "Nature Denatured and Found Again." One notable composition, "A Room Outdoors," marks his first exploration based on field recordings. The piece involves sustaining instruments played over a 48-minute field recording, blurring the boundaries between silence, found sound, and music. Definitive recordings from Brussels and Cremona showcase different and fascinating interpretations, each making profound statements about our relationship with everyday listening environments.
