Matthew Joseph Urango, known professionally as Cola Boyy, was born on February 14, 1990, in Oxnard, California. From birth, he faced physical challenges, including spina bifida, kyphosis, and scoliosis, conditions that shaped his perspective and fueled his passion for music and activism. Despite these challenges, Urango immersed himself in the local music scene, teaching himself to play piano at his grandmother's house and participating in punk bands during his teenage years. His early experiences in Oxnard's vibrant music community laid the foundation for his eclectic musical style, blending elements of disco, pop, and funk.

In 2018, Cola Boyy released his debut EP, 'Black Boogie Neon,' under the French label Record Makers. The EP featured standout tracks like 'Penny Girl' and 'Buggy Tip,' which garnered attention for their infectious melodies and genre-blending sound. The success of 'Black Boogie Neon' led to performances at major festivals, including Coachella in 2019, where Cola Boyy captivated audiences with his energetic stage presence and unique musical style. His ability to seamlessly blend disco rhythms with contemporary pop elements set him apart in the music industry.

Following the success of his debut EP, Cola Boyy collaborated with renowned artists such as MGMT and The Avalanches. In 2021, he released his first full-length album, 'Prosthetic Boombox,' which featured contributions from Nicolas Godin of Air and Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT. The album received critical acclaim for its innovative sound and heartfelt lyrics, further establishing Cola Boyy as a significant figure in the music industry. His collaborations showcased his versatility and ability to connect with a wide range of artists and audiences.

Beyond his musical achievements, Cola Boyy was a dedicated disability activist. He used his platform to advocate for inclusivity and social change, often addressing themes of empowerment and resilience in his music. His involvement with organizations like Todo Poder al Pueblo highlighted his commitment to community organizing and fighting for the rights of marginalized groups. In 2025, a year after his passing, Cola Boyy's final album, 'Quit to Play Chess,' was posthumously released. The album's title paid homage to artist Marcel Duchamp, reflecting Cola Boyy's appreciation for art and his multifaceted interests. 'Quit to Play Chess' received praise for its introspective lyrics and innovative sound, serving as a fitting conclusion to his impactful career. Cola Boyy's legacy endures through his music and activism, inspiring future generations to embrace their uniqueness and advocate for social justice.
