Kari Jahnsen, known professionally as Farao, was born and raised in Ulnes, a small village in the Nordic mountain valley of Valdres, Norway. Growing up in a community of just 500 people, she found solace and expression through music, developing a deep connection to various instruments and genres from an early age. This intimate environment fostered her creativity, allowing her to experiment and cultivate a distinctive musical style that would later define her career.

Farao's musical journey began with the release of her self-titled EP in 2013, which showcased her ethereal vocals and intricate compositions. Her debut album, 'Till It's All Forgotten,' released in 2015, was inspired by the film 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' and explored themes of memory and self-discovery. The album received critical acclaim, leading to a nomination for 'Best Composer' at the Norwegian Grammy Awards. In 2018, she released 'Pure-O,' an album that delved into the complexities of human relationships and desire, blending Soviet-era disco with modern electronic elements. Beyond her solo work, Farao is a member of the duo Ultraflex, whose debut album won 'Best Electronic Album' at the Icelandic Music Awards in 2021.

Farao's music is characterized by a fusion of smooth 90s R&B, sensual 80s disco, and ambient spiritual jazz. She draws inspiration from artists like Janet Jackson and Alice Coltrane, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Her use of vintage synthesizers and the zither adds a unique texture to her compositions, setting her apart in the contemporary music scene. Critics have praised her ability to blend these diverse influences seamlessly, resulting in a sound that is both familiar and innovative.

Throughout her career, Farao has collaborated with renowned mixing engineer Andrew Scheps, known for his work with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Adele.
