JWords, the Dominican-born producer half of H31R, and maassai met in 2017 at a showcase for Suzi Analogue’s label Never Normal in Brooklyn. JWords played a beat set, while maassai performed with a band. Their mutual appreciation for each other's distinctive styles led to the formation of H31R.
