Kamogelo Ami Masemola is a dynamic South African visual artist celebrated for his innovative and experimental painting techniques. His work seamlessly blends abstract forms with structured elements, capturing the emotional essence of natural phenomena. Masemola's unique approach involves manipulating layers of oil paint using heat guns and brushes, resulting in vibrant, textured compositions that resonate with depth and movement. His dedication to exploring new materials and techniques has positioned him as a significant figure in contemporary South African art.

Early Life

Kamogelo Ami Masemola discovered his passion for visual arts during his primary school years, attending afternoon classes and participating in various art competitions. Under the mentorship of artists like Paul Madi Phala, Michael Zikhali, and Buti Masike, he honed his skills and developed a deep appreciation for creative expression. Initially drawn to industrial design, Masemola's desire for unrestricted creativity led him to pursue formal education in fine arts at the Fuba School of Dramatic and Visual Arts, where he graduated in 2003.

Career

After completing his diploma in fine arts, Masemola dedicated a decade (2003–2013) to teaching art in Kwa-Thema, aiming to nurture the artistic potential of the youth and rebrand the township as an art hub. His teaching experience inspired him to adopt a more experimental approach to his own art, leading to a love for abstraction and exploration of new materials. In 2015, he co-founded BLAQUEINQ Contemporaries, an organization focusing on creating a community for professional and emerging artists in Ekurhuleni. That same year, he moved to August House in Johannesburg to focus on his career as a full-time studio artist.

Artistic Approach

Masemola's diverse and experimental painting practice resists easy characterization. His work includes structured, figurative compositions capturing the world of South African jazz, as well as abstract paintings featuring rich bursts of color, atomized forms, and layers of paint with strong geometric elements. His unique technique of manipulating layers of oil paint using a heat gun and brush evokes the idea of action painting. Inspired by nature, he captures the emotional essence of water, fire, and earth while incorporating structured elements reminiscent of his love for industrial design. His paintings combine representation, abstraction, and color, resulting in dramatic and exuberant compositions that reflect the triumphs and struggles of the artist's practice.
