LI YILEI

Born in China, LI YILEI was raised in a family deeply immersed in the arts. Their paternal relatives were painters, while the maternal side included writers and designers. This rich artistic environment naturally guided them toward creative pursuits. They initially trained in classical violin, which sparked an interest in the physicality of instruments and a desire to explore beyond traditional musical boundaries. Their educational journey led them to study fine art and sound art, laying the foundation for their interdisciplinary approach to music and performance.

Since 2018, LI YILEI has been releasing records and performing internationally. Their work is characterized by the use of found materials, poetry, and unconventional instruments, creating immersive auditory experiences. In 2016, they founded the NON DUAL Collective, focusing on curating live events for East and Southeast Asian emerging artists. Their compositions often incorporate damaged instruments, field recordings, and self-built devices, reflecting a commitment to exploring alternative modes of listening and existence.

As a Buddhist practitioner and gender activist, LI YILEI integrates their spiritual and social beliefs into their art. They aim to challenge conventional norms and advocate for underrepresented voices within the experimental music and art industries. Their work often addresses themes of impermanence, sensory perception, and the exploration of the unheard and unseen, inviting audiences to engage with sound and space in novel ways.

LI YILEI has released several notable works, including the albums '之 / OF' and 'NONAGE'. '之 / OF' explores the temporal relationship between experience and surroundings, composed during a period of quarantine and reflecting on the passage of time. 'NONAGE' delves into childhood memories, utilizing samples from old Chinese TV shows and mechanical children's toys to create a nostalgic yet experimental soundscape. These works showcase their ability to blend personal experiences with broader existential themes through sound.

Navigating the predominantly white male-dominated experimental music industry, LI YILEI faces challenges as a non-binary Asian artist. They often find it difficult to gain the same respect afforded to their male counterparts. Despite these obstacles, they remain committed to breaking down barriers and advocating for greater representation and inclusivity within the arts. Their presence and work serve as a testament to the importance of diverse voices in shaping the future of experimental music and art.
