RUMTUM

John Hastings, known professionally as RUMTUM, was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Growing up along the shores of Lake Erie, he developed a profound appreciation for aquatic nature and marine life. This early exposure to the natural world sparked his interest in art, leading him to spend countless hours drawing and observing the intricate balance between human, animal, and plant life in his environment.

His formative years were marked by a deep connection to the underwater world and its inhabitants. The geometric patterns found in tropical plants and the mysterious ambiance of the deep sea became significant influences in his artistic development. These elements would later manifest in his work, characterized by whimsical scenes and imaginative creatures that transport viewers to playful, otherworldly oases.

After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art & Design, Hastings relocated to Denver, Colorado, in 2010. This move introduced him to new landscapes and artistic communities, further enriching his creative pursuits. In Denver, he began operating under the moniker RUMTUM, engaging in both visual arts and music.

As a visual artist, RUMTUM's work explores the intersection of escapism and reality, often incorporating natural geometric patterns and whimsical scenes inspired by his love for aquatic landscapes. RUMTUM's discography showcases his evolution as a musician and producer. His debut album, 'Mystic Wonders' (2013), introduced listeners to his distinctive blend of electronic and ambient sounds. This was followed by collaborative projects with Monster Rally, including the 'MR & RT' EP, which received positive reviews for its innovative fusion of styles.

In 2022, he released 'Isles in Indigo,' an album that expanded on his established sound by incorporating aquatic ambient elements and mellow, melodic electronic compositions. The following year, 'Arcadian Daze' (2023) reflected on his late adolescence, capturing the excitement of his early musical explorations and paying homage to the electronic music that influenced him during that period.
