Growing up in North London, Surya Sen, born Rana Ali, was immersed in a diverse musical environment. His early exposure to grime and hip-hop, combined with frequent visits to iconic clubs like Fabric and Egg, shaped his musical tastes. Inspired by producers such as J Dilla and Pete Rock, he developed a passion for sampling and beat-making, leading him to explore various genres, including Detroit house and UK garage.

His journey into music was largely self-taught. Without formal training, he purchased a Roland SP-404 sampler and a portable turntable, dedicating countless hours to digging through vinyl records in East London's shops. This hands-on approach allowed him to craft a unique sound that seamlessly blends elements of hip-hop and house music.

In 2020, Surya Sen made his mark with the release of 'C U Later,' a track that garnered significant attention and led to his signing with Skint Records. This debut single set the stage for his innovative approach to music, blending hip-hop rhythms with house beats.

His debut mixtape, 'At What Cost?', released in April 2022, is a conceptual project that narrates a night out in post-lockdown London. The mixtape delves into themes of escapism, gentrification, and the complexities of modern urban life. Tracks like 'Earn It' and 'Buccho Ni Ba Bhai (Grindin')' highlight his ability to infuse social commentary into danceable beats, reflecting on issues such as financial struggles and the history of the Bangladeshi community in East London.

As a British-Bangladeshi artist, Surya Sen is at the forefront of a new wave of South Asian talent in the UK's music scene. He is a member of the Daytimers collective, a group dedicated to showcasing South Asian artists in the electronic music landscape. His work challenges traditional narratives and provides representation for a community often underrepresented in mainstream music.
