Terrace Martin

Terrace Jamahl Martin was born on December 28, 1978, in Los Angeles, California. Growing up in a musically rich environment, his father, Ernest 'Curly' Martin, was a renowned jazz drummer, and his mother was a singer. This familial influence immersed Terrace in a diverse range of musical genres from an early age, including jazz legends like John Coltrane and funk pioneers like Parliament.

At the age of six, Martin began playing the piano, demonstrating an early aptitude for music. By thirteen, he was producing his own tracks using a Casio CZ-101 keyboard and an E-mu SP-1200 sampler. Encouraged to take up the saxophone, he taught himself to play before enrolling at Santa Monica High School to further hone his skills. He later transferred to Locke High School, where he studied under the esteemed Reggie Andrews and became the first chair of the All-State Jazz Band. Recognized as a child prodigy, Martin received a scholarship from talk show host Jay Leno, who also gifted him his first professional saxophone.

In 2020, he formed the supergroup Dinner Party with Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, and 9th Wonder, releasing a self-titled album that further showcased his genre-blending prowess.
